Laboratory Equipment Web Design

Physicians Laboratory provides Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Services to physician offices, clinics, and surrounding-area hospitals. They offer information and and online story for ordering on their website.

It was my responsibility to update the design of their website as well as improve usability and on-page SEO. They already had existing branding, so it was important to stay consistent with that. I worked closely with an IT person on their site as well as a developer to achieve the functionalities requested by the customer.

Challenge

The challenge with PL Path web design and build was that there was a lot of information needing to be communicated. They also wanted to incorporate an online store for their customers to order from. Their past site had one custom set up and they wanted this same thing added to their new site. They had no need to process payment, rather a custom-built ordering system. They also requested having a blog incorporated in their site for notifications, as well as many editable pages with information. The biggest challenge was setting up the CMS for easy editing. This required strategy and asking the customer for constant feedback.

Design Solution

I really wanted to modernize and freshen up the look of their site. This required some research into looking at healthcare and medical web inspiration. They already had existing branding so I kept the color scheme of burgundy, dark blue, and grey tones. I found that many medical sites try to instill trust and comfort in their digital presence. I decided to use some muted imagery with gradient overlays, different shades of burgundy, and a clean design for their website. Their website contained and required a lot of content, so I took a content-first approach and focused on organizing it the most usable way possible. They needed a blog function added to their site, many editable pages, and an online ordering store–so my design needed to keep those features in mind during design and development.

Editable Page Templates

As mentioned the website required a lot of information to be included on their website. The customer would need to update a lot of information and forms frequently on the site. Knowing that their site would be set up on a WordPress CMS this required me to create a number of page templates to prevent styling issues and ease of use. Below you can see a general page template I set up for easy editing.

Overview

This was a great project to work on. The customer was really happy with the outcome of their site, as it was so much easier for them to edit and manage. It was such a different industry that it required me to become familiar with medical and healthcare web design. Their staff was extremely easy to work with and it was nice to have her and a developer to bounce ideas with. Overall, I was happy to see the efforts of my design benefit the customer.
